Ingredients

  • 1 large apple, coarsely diced
  • 1 stick of cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 vanilla pod, split lengthwise, or ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract or paste
  • Juice of ½ fresh lemon
  • 2 cups pre-brewed sweetened iced tea 480 gm
  • 1 tablespoon honey

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Apples
  1. Start by washing and coarsely dicing your apple. Leaving the skin on adds both fiber and a lovely color to the drink. Set the apple pieces aside.
Step 2: Combine Ingredients
  1. In a small saucepan, combine the diced apple, stick of cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and the split vanilla pod (or extract). Add the lemon juice for that zing.
Step 3: Heat it Up
  1. Pour in the pre-brewed sweetened iced tea. Heat the mixture over medium heat. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking, and let it simmer for about 10 minutes. You will start to see steam rise and smell the lovely aromas filling your kitchen.
Step 4: Strain and Sweeten
  1. Once the tea is aromatic and warm, remove it from the heat. Use a fine mesh strainer to strain the mixture into your favorite cup. Press down gently on the apples with a spoon to extract more flavor.
Step 5: Sweeten to Taste
  1. Stir in the tablespoon of honey, adjusting based on your preferred sweetness level. Remember, the apples already add some natural sweetness.
Step 6: Garnish and Enjoy
  1. If you’re feeling fancy, add a fresh slice of apple or a sprinkle of cinnamon on top as a garnish. Sip slowly; enjoy every drop!

Notes

  • Choose the Right Apple: Go for a sweet variety, like Fuji or Honeycrisp, for the best flavor.
  • Adjust Sweetness: Add more honey if you prefer sweeter tea. Maple syrup can also work well.
  • Use Fresh Spices: Freshly ground spices can elevate the flavor. A small coffee grinder can do the trick.
  • Experiment with Teas: While I use sweetened iced tea, feel free to try chai or herbal teas for a unique twist.
  • Make it Ahead: The mix can be made a few hours in advance. Just reheat before serving.
