Ingredients

  • 4 cups frozen trimmed green beans
  • 1 teaspoon low-sodium soy sauce
  • ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon seasoned salt adjust to taste
  • 10 can 10.5-ounce condensed cream of mushroom soup
  • ½ cup whole milk
  • 1 clove garlic, minced optional
  • 1 cups ½ crispy fried onions, divided

Method

Step 1: Prepare the Oven
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). While it warms up, I gather the ingredients, setting myself up for a quick assembly.
Step 2: Mix the Base
  1. In a large mixing bowl, I combine the frozen green beans, soy sauce, pepper, seasoned salt, cream of mushroom soup, milk, and garlic if I’m using it. Then, I stir until everything is well-combined. This creamy mixture is where the magic happens—the flavors meld together beautifully, creating a rich base.
Step 3: Add the Fried Onions
  1. This is where I ensure none of the crispy fried onions go to waste! I fold in 1 cup of them into the mixture, reserving the remaining ½ cup for topping later. These onions add a delightful crunch when baked, making the casserole even more enjoyable.
Step 4: Transfer and Bake
  1. Now that everything is combined, I pour the mixture into a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. I make sure it spreads evenly to allow for proper baking. Into the preheated oven it goes for about 25 minutes. This is the perfect time to clean up a bit or set the table!
Step 5: Top and Finish Baking
  1. After 25 minutes, I pull the dish from the oven, and the smell is absolutely enticing! I sprinkle the reserved fried onions on top for that wonderful crunch. Back into the oven it goes for another 10-15 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
Step 6: Serve and Enjoy
  1. Once it's bubbly and the onions are a beautiful golden brown, I take it out and let it sit for a few minutes. This allows it to set slightly. It’s tough to wait, but you'll be rewarded when you take that first scoop!

Notes

  • Frozen Green Beans: I opt for frozen because they’re pre-trimmed and quick. Fresh green beans can also work equally well; just blanch them first. Canned beans are a choice too, but they may alter the texture.
  • Cream of Mushroom Soup: This is a key ingredient I never skip, bringing creaminess and flavor. Some brands are richer than others, so try a couple to find your favorite.
  • Crispy Fried Onions: I use these for both flavor and texture. They can easily be found in stores, but homemade versions do exist if you’re feeling adventurous!
