Ingredients

  • 8 oz rich dark chocolate chips or candy melts
  • 8 oz creamy white chocolate chips or melting wafers
  • 2 bags of microwave buttered popcorn, freshly popped
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoons neutral vegetable oil optional for smoother melting
  • ¼ teaspoon sea salt flakes

Method

Step 1: Pop the Corn
  1. Start by popping your microwave buttered popcorn. Follow the instructions on the package, and once done, let it cool for a few minutes. Be sure to check for any unpopped kernels; nobody wants a surprise crunch!
Step 2: Melt the Chocolate
  1. Divide the chocolate chips into two separate microwave-safe bowls. In one bowl, add the dark chocolate chips. In the other, put the white chocolate chips.
  2. If you choose to use vegetable oil, add it to each bowl now. This will help achieve a smoother consistency. Microwave the dark chocolate for 30 seconds, then stir. Repeat until melted and fully combined. Do the same for the white chocolate.
Step 3: Mix the Popcorn
  1. In a large bowl, combine your popped popcorn. Make a well in the center and pour the melted dark chocolate over it. Toss gently to coat, ensuring each kernel has a chocolatey hug.
Step 4: Add the White Chocolate
  1. Next, do the same with the white chocolate. Drizzle it over the dark chocolate-coated popcorn and give it another toss. This layering is what makes the flavor more exciting!
Step 5: Season with Sea Salt
  1. Sprinkle the sea salt flakes generously over the mixture. This is where the sweet and salty magic happens. Then, spread the concoction onto a parchment-lined baking sheet for cooling.
Step 6: Let It Set
  1. Allow the chocolate to harden for at least 30 minutes. Don’t rush this process; letting it set will enhance the texture.
Step 7: Break Apart and Serve
  1. Once the chocolate is firm, break the popcorn into clusters. Place them in a large bowl and get ready to enjoy! You can also package these in cute bags for friends, family, or yourself—because who doesn’t love a little homemade gift?

Notes

  1. Choose Quality Chocolate: The better the chocolate, the better your finished product will be. Look for high-quality chocolate chips or melts.
  2. Avoid Overheating: When melting chocolate, do it in short bursts. Stir well between each burst to ensure even melting.
  3. Use Sturdy Popcorn: For best results, use fresh popped popcorn. Avoid store-bought pre-packaged popcorn as it can become stale.
  4. Add-Ins: Experiment! Toss in nuts, pretzels, or even your favorite candies for a crunchy twist.
Storage Tips: If you have leftovers, store the popcorn in an airtight container to keep it fresh and crispy.
